Sleepwell™ mandibular advancement splint — snoring and sleep apnoea
The Sleepwell™ mandibular advancement splint (MAS) is used to treat snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
What is snoring? Snoring is more than a disruptive noise at night. Simple snoring is caused by partial closure of the upper airway during sleep. The reduction in airflow is what creates the sound, as the soft tissues at the back of the throat vibrate. Weight, age, gender, alcohol, smoking and sleeping position can all increase the likelihood. Middle-aged men are three times more likely to snore than women.
Ranging from 50 to 100 decibels — the equivalent of a pneumatic drill — snoring can lead to relationship problems, exhaustion, increased stress and depression. In some cases, though not all, it can also indicate obstructive sleep apnoea, which is potentially life-threatening if left untreated.
What is obstructive sleep apnoea? OSA is caused by repeated collapsing of the airway during sleep, resulting in complete (apnoea) or partial (hypopnoea) obstruction of airflow for 10 seconds or more. To a bed partner, these episodes look like the sufferer stopping breathing, often waking with a snort or gasp.
Left untreated, these disruptions can lead to increased blood pressure, heightened risk of cardiovascular disease, strokes, diabetes and excessive daytime sleepiness.
How the splint works. Worn during sleep, a MAS prevents closure of the airway by holding the lower jaw forward, keeping the airway open and unobstructed. Sleepwell™ is the most clinically proven MAS for snoring and mild to moderate OSA, and during clinical trials 98% of patients found the device acceptable. Features include:
